Meet The Net Nutritionist

Gay Riley

MS, RD, CCN, FMN

Welcome! I’m a functional medicine nutritionist dedicated to finding whole person solutions for your health concerns.

Health challenges are very familiar to me.

Hi, I’m Gay Riley and for years I struggled with chronic digestive issues, fatigue, trouble sleeping, infections, not being able to lose weight, and joint pain that interrupted my daily quality of life.  It was incredibly frustrating and entirely scary to think these symptoms might be something serious. Doctors tried to help by prescribing meds that seemed to only cause more problems.

In desperation, I was forced to take a hard and honest look at what was causing my health problems and physical symptoms –my diet, lifestyle habits, family genetics, relationships, and environment. What an eye-opening exercise. I ultimately had to admit to myself that the reasons for my symptoms were created by me. It was a humbling thought but one that opened my eyes. Because I had largely created – or at least aggravated – the problems myself, it meant that I had the power to get better.

My recovery took almost 18 months but the symptoms eventually went away, my energy came back, and I lost weight. I’ve never been healthier.

My GI symptoms disappeared along with the joint pain, my weight stabilized by 15 pounds, my sleep improved, and I woke up refreshed and energetic.

This personal journey has had a profound influence on how I work with my clients. It heightened my skills, knowledge, experience, and intuition and sparked a passion to help others have the same experience. Everyone wants control over their health.

For the past 15 years, the science of genomics and nutrigenomics has been a passion of mine in work and in life. I have applied my own genomic picture to my daily living and it works. Genetics is the missing link of personalized nutrition of the past. It’s easy to test and invaluable in its depth of insight.

When we work together, I use all of my life experiences and knowledge in practicing the art and science of nutritional medicine to help you overcome your complex health challenges. I have dedicated my career to helping people just like you find the path back to feeling your best and learn how to stay that way.

Training + Experience

In case you’re wondering what all of those initials after my name stand for, my credentials include a master’s degree in Clinical, Sports Nutrition, and Exercise Physiology (MS) and am a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN), Certified Clinical Nutritionist (CCN), Functional Medicine Nutritionist (FMN), and Licensed Dietitian Nutritionist (LDN) in five states.  I have been learning, practicing, and trailblazing the science of holistic, integrative and functional medicine for over 30 years.

Throughout my career I have been obsessed with learning the science of nutritional medicine from a holistic, “whole person” perspective. As an undergraduate, I found the power of plants, herbal medicine, homeopathy, and nutritional supplements fascinating, which was very unconventional in those days.

After getting my RD, I was hired to do research, and create specialized diets for children with seizures, complex metabolic conditions, and birth defects. That work solidly taught me that food really is medicine with the power to heal and transform lives.

In the mid 80’s, I had the pleasure of working with morbidly obese individuals at Baylor University where I saw firsthand that one diet or way of eating to lose weight does NOT work for everyone. It was such a revelation to me that I wrote my thesis on the subject. That led to my working with professional athletes, sports teams, and the gym industry, and the deepening of my belief in the importance of food and nutrition on physical and mental performance and recovery.

Wanting to know more in order to do more for clients, I studied the science of environmental medicine, genomics, energy medicine, and functional nutrition. Traditional dietetics no longer aligned with my healing philosophy. Every person is different and personalized Nutritional Medicine is the answer.

I have been doing this for a long time. In 1988 I started a personalized nutrition practice in Dallas, Texas. In 1997, I launched  Netnutritionist.com, the first telehealth nutrition practice, enabling me to work with people all over the world. I welcome you to take control of and experience great health. You hold the power.

Doctors Advice When I turned 55 my doctor referred me to Gay Riley. I couldn’t lose weight, had high blood sugar, insomnia and constant stomach problems. Gay had a system for what she called “looking for root cause resolution”? She created a personal plan based on my genetics, an extensive history, blood and stool tests, and lots of questions. Gay explained my test results and taught me how my habits were affecting my health. After 3 months I started to lose weight, my blood sugars improved and no more bloating. I felt like I was in control of my health for the first time in 10 years. So happy I finally took my doctors advice!

Bad Food and Bad Habits I come from a small town and have been a trucker my whole life.  At 57 I felt bad.  I was overweight, depressed, had burning joint pain, high blood pressure, diabetes, and had no idea what to eat.  I called Gay to learn what to eat but she gave me a lesson on me, and why I felt so bad.  We had to do a lot of testing but basically, I was living a life of bad food and bad habits!  She said I had a lot of inflammation and helped me learn what to do to reduce it.  My joint pain is gone, blood pressure and blood sugars are normal, and I have lost weight.  Now at 57 I know what to do to stay healthy and feel my best.  Thank you, Gay.

I Feel Good Again I contacted Gay because she helped my mom so much. I had severe depression, mood swings, poor digestion and couldn’t sleep.  I didn’t feel good and had trouble keeping up with daily tasks.  I ate sugar throughout the day to cope. Gay helped me understand how my lifestyle habits, history and genetics were impacting my health. Through testing and over-the-top support from Gay she was able to pinpoint the main source of my symptoms.  I learned what my body needed to heal… beneficial foods for my mood and energy, nutritional supplements to support my digestion, and lifestyle behaviors to restore my energy and mind.  I feel good again.
